Work Overview

"The kind is sick and wan;

he wears his crown awry;

his robes are fouled.

Around his neck, along his fingers

are imitation stones.

He is a feverish kind, with rotting teeth,

in love with black magic and liturgy…

Folial, the clown,

in his livery of showy colours,

is an athlete with twisted legs,

rather spiderish in appearance.

He comes from Flanders.

His head - a big, expressive ball -

is lit by eyes like lenses…"
