Work Overview
Gili Mimpang is a group of small islands about a kilometre off the north east coast of Bali. It is on the edge of the Lombok Strait, a narrow but quite deep stretch of water. Cool upward current maintain pristine reefs and abundant sea life making it a popular scuba diving and snorkelling spot. This piece describes the the composer's emotions while snorkelling in a gentle swell, observing schools of Oriental Sweetlips and Fusiliers and a multitude of marine creatures including his favourite, the juvenile Emperor Angelfish. The middle section depicts the times when the weather suddenly turns nasty and the islands are battered by waves, forcing visitors back to the boat. The squalls can pass as quickly as they start and one can return to snorkelling.
