Work Overview
"Maranoa Lullaby was collected in the Maranoa district
in Southern Queensland by Dr H O Lethbridge. An arrangement of it
for voice and piano, by Arthur S Loam, was published by Allan
& Co, Melbourne, in the 1930s. This was later made popular by
the Aboriginal tenor Harold Blair. In 2007, his 1950 recording of
it was chosen by the National Film and Sound Archive as one of
its 'Sounds of Australia.'
When I was a student in Melbourne, in the 1940s, I made an
orchestral arrangement of the lullaby. I have since used it in
several works, notably Cello Dreaming, for solo cello and strings
(1998) and my choral Requiem (2004)" -- P. Sculthorpe.
