Work Overview
This is orchestral surf music. The piece is meant to express the
surf, and our experience of it and the feelings that such
experience engenders within us.
This work is easily playable by a good youth orchestra. It
explores the feelings of going to the beach - the drive, the
anticipation of a good surf, anticipating a great day out, and
also the feelings of being in the surf - a good ride on your
board, the turbulence of diving under the sets, and also just
lying on the sand. The Coda suggests a change in conditions -
like a southerly rolling in or the north east chop. It's language
is tonal, and the orchestration is classic Rimsky Korsakov and
Respighi, with a hint of Michael Torke, so it comes together in
rehearsal pretty quickly.
