Work Overview
The title clearly identifies the two strongly contrasted types of music which are present during most of this piece. They are initially set out in sections. The song is embedded in monolithic chords and is always descending: the pitches are freely chosen, but its recurrences are varied in a controlled manner. Sometimes it is hidden in a sequence of staccato chords as attempts are made to combine it with a stuttering element of the 'display' music. Both types of music soon return simultaneously, each now with its original character clearly discernible. A large section is built from these two elements. Within it is another more static section, which uses the earlier stuttering idea writ large.
The title was chosen after the composition was written. There is an association with Aboriginal chant and perhaps there is a connection between the display of the Corroboree dance and that of the piano virtuosi.
