Work Overview

Two earlier works for prepared tuitar, Draw Near to the Bell and Objects, Actions I,1 are progenitors of this piece. Features which are borrowed from the earlier pieces are firstly, the method of preparation with Blu-Tack, secondly the form of the aforementioned second piece and thirdly the incorporation of bells.

With regard to Interplay, two standard 6-stringed guitars take part in three duets. Only one of the guitars is prepared and at the time of writing this is the one which is pre-recorded. The preparation pushes the instrument into a more muted microtonal sound domain and I therefore used it as an area of mediation between the live guitar and the electronic sounds.

Whereas the duets are conceived linearly, the electronic music is presented harmonically and in layers. A lot of effort was invested to reproduce the characteristics of bells in the Introduction. The decay oif a last bell-like attack leads into the first duet, followed by a section of electronic material. At the edges of these sections, the different sound sources, whether live or not have been carefully dovetailed. This leads to an explosive entry of a section for four 'monster' sampled guitars which form another meeting point between guitar and electronics.

After further sections of electronic music, duetting and massed guitars, the composition takes a surpring turn with the entry of analogue sounds (from the 'real' world), after which the piece is forced to re-balance itself as the third duet is presented with an extended ending.
