Work Overview

The content is based on five distinctive self-contained types or textures of music which are presented in sections. Each type recurs in a freely chosen order in varied form: these are the counterbalancing sections. One of them is a completion rather than a variation.

There is an additional section involving bisbigliando (a sort of tremolo) which is only distantly related to the first type of music. Because its identity is so different from the surrounding sections, it fulfills the role of an interlude.
