Work Overview

Overman considered her three-act opera Psyche to be her masterpiece, and much of the material has been reworked for works in different instrumentation. In the opera the flute plays and important role - that of the Satyr who seduces the main character Psyche - and all the movements of Sonata no.1 rely heavily on material reworked for the combination of flute and piano. In almost every instrumental work that Overman wrote, she incorporated her favourite theme and variation form. In this sonata the second movement is a set of variations based on a theme used in the opera. In the opera, the seduction scene between the Satyr and Psyche takes place in the form of a dance and the material used in that scene forms the basis of the fourth movement of this sonata. The sonata was complete in 1956, one year after the completion of the Three Dances for piano solo, two of which also use material reworked from the opera.
