Work Overview
Following his death in 1992 the John Cage estate allowed the creation of sample libraries of his various prepared instruments. This particular collection of sounds was created for use in his magnum opus composition, Sonatas & Interludes (February 1946-March 1948). Using his original materials and following the precise instructions found at the head of his published score.
The pitch class collection for each of the dances comes come from the overtone series and its inversions of each of the cage estate samples featured in their respective dance. The striking sounds contain 3 sometimes four clear overtones otherwise not found in the un-prepared fundamental. This rich source of harmonic and melodic material set to traditional and 21st century dance forms.
