Work Overview
Krazny is a work for solo trombone and CD accompaniment completed in early July 2001. From the very beginning, the intention was to create a work with interaction between the acoustic trombone and the electronic accompaniment as there is always a danger that the two parts can be written independently and therefore have no relationship with each other.
The title, Krazny, is the Russian word for Red and the work represents the communist oppression over many decades of Russia and other countries. The sounds contained on the accompaniment CD are acoustic sounds and spoken key words like "torture" etc that have been recorded and then processed by time-code expansion, ring modulation and spectral mutation.
The first section of this work is harsh and contains interaction between the CD accompaniment and trombone. The material in the acoustic trombone is based largely on quartertones and faster passages, while the material in the CD accompaniment is based predominantly on violent sounds. The second section in contrast, is more passive; interaction between the CD and trombone is less prevalent here. The Trombone's harmonic material still has a heavy emphasis on quartertones, only with the use of long and gradual glissandi that expose the microtonal nature of the trombone. Similarly, the material in the CD accompaniment is largely based on long resonant sostenuto-like sounds.
