Work Overview
Within milliseconds of hearing a sound in a room we hear its first few reflections from walls, ceiling, etc. These 'early reflections' provide us with a subliminal index of the room's shape and size. They also create patterns in time which, when greatly magnified, can be rendered as musical rhythms. This piece derives its material from such patterns. Having chosen this methodology for the piece I needed to establish from what 'rooms' should these indices be derived. A painting by Mondrian furnished the answer providing, as it does, a 'ground plan' of the utmost elegance from which I adopted the requisite ratios.
