Work Overview
The White Raven is an extract and adaptation for quintet a movement from a larger 4-movement symphonic work entitled Fables Macabres. This programmatic in nature, based on a collection of quite macabres, yet humoristic Australian Aboriginal fables. Musical influences on this piece are quite diverse: The rhythmic language incorporates elements from Latin music, in particular Afro-Cuban rumba, and cha cha cha, but with an odd meter twist, as well as inspiration from the odd and bouncy irregular groupings of 2 and 3 notes, characteristic of folkloric music from the Balkan countries. Melodically and harmonically, a modern jazz language is employed, and there are options for jazz solos.
