Work Overview
The title is courtesy of a poem by Tennyson. The music reflects the fundamentally content mood of the poem, which was written in celebration of a marriage. By reflecting on the earth's cycle, Tennyson anticipates the next day as one to look forward to: 'And move me to my marriage-morn, / And round again to happy night.'
Tennyson's preoccupation with the earth's cycle is consistent with a harmonic progression that becomes a self-repeating unit. On the one hand, this recalls the time-honoured variations on a ground bass; on the other hand it is reminiscent of many pieces of jazz where a soloist improvises over a given set of chords.
