Work Overview
Don't be afraid was inspired by a dreaming story of the Dharawal people, Birth of the Butterfly. It tells the story of a land between the sweetness of spring and the bitterness of winter. The story describes a group of caterpillars who leave earth to explore the metaphysical realm of death, and who return changed, clothed in beautiful colours, as the first butterflies.
In reference to this story, I drew upon my own fears about change, because it is often a challenge. I wonder a lot about change, because of all the world's stories, transformation is central to who we are as people, and finding our way through the winter of despair to a beautiful future is a hope I have for us all.
