Work

In praise of sandstone : for voices, piano (4 hands) and percussion (6 players)

by Elliott Gyger (2012)

Work Overview

This work was written for performance in the New Hall at Sydney Grammar School, which is underground and partially dug out of the sandstone on which the city rests. The text is drawn from John Tranter's 2003 poem, a wry meditation on the myriad ways that sandstone underpins Sydney's history and present; strata of rock become metaphors for the passing of time and the layering of experience. The musical setting is similarly layered, with its multiple ensembles of voices and instruments.
