Work Overview
Rather than follow the traditional sequence of different, disparate movements, and risk the possibility of disunity, I decided to write a work for the string quartet medium that would be self-contained in one compact, succinct movement.
The title "Syntheses" is explained by the fact that not only is the work a synthesis of many influences, but also a synthesis of several compositional processes.
There are periods of robust motivic writing where the instruments jostle and joust at close quarters; there are others where there is counterpointing at wider, more spacious intervals. It is towards this latter kind of texture that there is a cadencing and sense of resolution, with quiet repetitions of widely spaced, interlocking lines and contours.
