Work Overview

Unlike its companions, cast in a single movement, Filigrees 4 is in four separate movements. The first, "Prelude", opens with a slow exposition using the whole keyboard - over a low pedal, arpeggios in the high treble decorate a slowly emerging ostinato in the central register. As the momentum and dynamic grow, the low (A) pedal moves to include its neighbour G sharp, and these two notes alternate with the central ostinato which becomes louder and more insistent, until a maximum of intensity and volume is attained.

"Lulude", the second movement, is in a lighter, more playful vein; double notes alternate between the right and left hand, gradually ascending the keyboard, often breaking into rapid arpeggios. This rapid alternation reaches a furious paroxysm which also dissolves into arpeggios before descending and declining into a final ritardando.

"Interlude", the third movement, begins in a gentle, meditative mood - it consists essentially of two chords which gradually assert themselves and alternate, interspersed with rapid arpeggios reminiscent of the preceding movement "Lulude".

In the final movement, "Conclude", the motifs and material of the previous three come together - the use of the whole keyboard spectrum, bass, central and treble, from "Prelude", the two defining chords of "Interlude" and a full recapitulation of the alternating double notes from "Lulude", now heard over the low pedal (A) from "Prelude", which is quietly but insistently present until the end.
