Work Overview
The ideas behind these movements took their inspiration from 3 contemporary water colour seascapes painted by the visual artist Sue Needham.
The first movement 'A Following Breeze' begins its journey under heavy grey skies and aims to represent some of the joys associated with sailing downwind.
The second movement 'Becalmed' finds the listener in a world of increased intensity similar to that experienced when the wind decides to abate during a long sailing journey.
This intensification is accomplished through the use of a textual fugato string climax. The guitar also moves towards its own textual (chordal) climax in this movement.
The Third movement 'Tidal March of the Soldier Crabs' is a light-hearted reference to the rather mad scurrying activities that are performed by crustaceans during their rather hurried feeding activities at low tide. Although the title may suggest a type of organised social activity, my crab march aims to represent the idea of 'every crab for himself' when it comes to food gathering by the seaside.
