Work

Valley Spirit : two nocturnes for cello and piano

by Ross Edwards (2017)

Work Overview

Valley Spirit was born in my imagination one afternoon when my daughter Emily Frankie and I descended into a mysterious mountain valley, where rock ledges were adorned with ancient ferns and carpeted with moss, and the air was resonant with the sound of birdsong and falling water. A wandering wind and thunderclaps promised joyous havoc to come. Following a brief storm, ponds reflecting a sky of rainbows brought to mind the serene East Asian Goddess Guan-Yin, sometimes symbolised as a rainbow, who listens with compassion to the cries of anguished humanity, and to whom the second part of my piece pays homage with veiled gong sounds and songlike melody. A quirky dance episode derived from insect sound patterns leads to a return of the gongs, which fade away into a mysterious twilight.
