Work Overview

the sun behind it, burning it… explores aspects of the intense sun in the Australian landscape in late summer. It was inspired by part of The Simplest of Things, a poem by Australian poet Esther Theiler:

summer's life ends,

and the blood-coloured poppy,

the sun behind it, burning it

to transcendence,

is a substance close to flame

the sun behind it, burning it… was composed for Marshall McGuire at the invitation of Brenton Broadstock when he was Head of Composition at the University of Melbourne. I recorded Marshall playing it in a quiet room at the old Conservatorium of Music in Royal Parade, Parkville. Marshall premiered it in 2003 at the composer's weekly seminar. My recording was included on the Move Records CD Curiosities, Chamber music of Eve Duncan in 2007.

The music was performed many times by harpist Jacinta Dennett, both in Australia and in Italy. It was also a part of her exploration of solo harp music by Australian women composers in her Doctor of Philosophy. She often recited the text as a part of the performance. I really liked this addition to the original score, and I invite other harpists to do likewise.
