Hommage à Kurtág : for female voice and piano / James Cuddeford.
Library shelf no. 783.6542/CUD 1 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
Hommage à Kurtág is a tribute to my teacher and the text alternates the phonemes of his name with haiku by Bashō. However, only one haiku is sung complete (three lines); the remaining two are progressively fragmented (two and one line respectively). There are obvious parallels in brevity, intensity and density between Bashō and Kurtág, and the composer would inspire one in his teaching with seemingly paradoxical and impossible challenges, much like a zen master does with kōans.
