Work Overview
The Suite was commissioned by Australian harpsichord player
Audley Green. Audley has lived for many years with her husband
and family on the Eastern coast of the United States of America,
however she has regularly come back to Australia to give
concerts, touring many thousands of kilometres with her van and
harpsichord throughout Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.
Together with flautist John Wion, Audley
gave the Australian premier of the Suite in Canberra in 1991.
The third movement American Dream was written while I
was staying with Audley and her husband in winter, 1990, at their
homes in Hartford, Connecticut and North Waterford, Maine. Audley
took myself and Rosemary Parle, also visiting to a large theatre
in Hartford where a congregation of some 3000 black people were
commemorating Martin Luther King Day with prayers, orations and
singing. The passion of both speakers and
congregation made a vivid impression, and as a result I wrote
this movement whilst still in America, surrounded by snow and the
sights and sounds of the North Eastern United States. The oratory
and the massed singing are reflected in the two moods of this
movement.
