Work Overview
Binna Burra Dreaming is a concert-level work for Cello, incorporating bravura effects for cello including harmonics, pizzicato and sul ponticello. The title of the work is taken from the aboriginal name for 'where the beech tree grows'. The work is in one movement and through-composed in several sections in various modal minor tonalities and varying time signatures. The piece begins with a rhythmic cello figure representing the sound of a digeridoo chanting 'binna burra'. The 'beech tree grows' motif appears throughout the work in different guises. Apart from the melodies, there are many changes of mood, and sections with intriguing rhythms and contemporary jazz harmonies.
Cellist Ariel Volovelsky together with composer/pianist Margaret Brandman recorded this work for the album 'Binna Burra Dreaming' - five works for cello and piano on the Elkwood/Sony Label.
