Work Overview

Commissioned by the son of Prof. E. Malcolm Symonds as a surprise gift for his 88th birthday, Three Songs on Music and Time is a setting by Andrew Anderson of three poems that use the example of music to reflect on different aspects of time. Dorothy Parker's "Faute de Mieux" ("For lack of something better") bubbles with the spirit of youth, where time is plentiful and can be passed without care. Thomas Hardy's "The House of Hospitalities" is a bittersweet reverie in old age about people and celebrations now lost to time's passing, whilst Percy Bysshe Shelley's "Music When Soft Voices Die (To-)" provides hope that, even in death, we will persist through the memories and love of those left behind. Professor Symonds passed away in March, 2023.
