"Music Play'st" is a choral piece designed to be performable live over the internet through video conferencing or similar technology and to circumvent the issue of latency. It is therefore structured so that precise co-ordination is not required. The choral parts consist of free rhythms that create a harmonic cloud that hints at a variation of the La Follia ground bass. Above that solo voices sing words from two of Shakespeare's sonnets (128 and 8). It can of course also be performed live in concert.
Instrumentation: SATB choir, with SATB soloists.
Duration: 3 min.
Commission note: Commissioned by Peggy Glanville-Hicks Commissions.. Supported through the Australian Music Centre's Peggy Glanville-Hicks Commissioning Initiative
