Work Overview
Mularra Lament uses a fragment of an indigenous songline as a way of exploring ideas of reconciliation. It craves atonement and expresses sorrow for past wrongs. Mularra also examines a theme central to indigenous culture, that in death, the full richness of artistic life is celebrated, hence there are sections of dance-like exhilaration as well as mourning. The piece is in three main sections: an opening statement of the songline, a ritual celebratory dance and a third solemn and sparse lament.
