Work Overview

Based on Martin Luther's hymn, 'Aus tiefer not schrei ich zu dir' this De Profundis setting, commissioned by The Song Company as one of a number of responses to Lutheran chorales, looks backwards from Bach in its use of early music techniques. The piece uses such devices as mensuration canon (where a melody is sung simultaneously at different speeds), retrograde passages (where the tune is sung in reverse from the end towards the beginning) as well as antiphonal textures and free chant sections. Such ancient techniques are beautifully flexible and can also be used in new ways, complemented by clusters of accumulated pitches outlined in the voice parts and sustained by the chamber organ. Although I derived most of the pitch material from the hymn's melody (with occasional modal alterations) a more overtly chorale-like style is suggested in a brief climactic moment before the re-iteration of the opening canonic texture, releasing to free melodic cascades and soft whistling to create a ghostly effect.
