Work Overview
This work explores various aspects of virtuosity within a modernist/neo-romantic idiom. It was originally written for viola, 'cello and piano and now achieves its final form for the more traditional piano trio ensemble. In two large movements of approximately equal duration (slow/fast), the piece's hybrid style combines characteristics of chamber music and concerto genres (most notably in the various cadenzas that appear throughout for different player combinations).
