Work Overview

'Shallow River' opens with a burst of scale and arpeggio figures that depict the unpredictable current of a river. It's a dramatic piece that tells a dramatic story. The syncopation is constant controling the rhythmic tension throughout. As each episode unfolds, it conveys the sense of being carried along with relentless momentum that cannot stop. There is a brief moment of reflection with a passionate melody on the G string but soon returns to the opening momentum. The piece was inspired by the Bolton Strid River in Yorkshire. It's a seemingly harmless narrow creek that connects with the wider River Wharfe. It is, surprisingly, extremely deadly and is known as the most danger river in the world. It is said that anyone who steps into the Strid is immediately swept away to their death. 'Shallow River' is a concert piece with brilliance and flair. It fits easily into left hand finger positions and is suitable for School music performances.
