Work Overview
This piece was written in Canberra, 2007. It is for advanced SATB choir. All parts are divisi. Bert Birtles was an Australian poet, journalist, and author of the early 20th century. Thus Spake Zarathustra was published in 1934 in his anthology Black Poppies. The anthology included one infamous poem of the time, written for his lover and later wife Dora in 1923 called Beauty. The poem Beauty, which was initially published in a Sydney University Magazine in the 1920's, caused them both to be expelled from Sydney University, as the poem was judged to be immoral. Bert's other work included Exiles in the Aegean, which was about the Regime of the Colonels in Greece. Bert passed away in 1994. His wife Dora Birtles was also a well known Australian author through her autobiographical North-West by North, which documented her expedition from Australia to New Guinea and Singapore, and The Overlanders, which written as a feature film in 1946.
