Beowulf : sonata for double bass and piano / music by Larry Sitsky.
Library shelf no. 787.5/SIT 2 [Not for loan]
Work Overview
This large scale sonata for double bass and piano was written for
Robert Nairn at his request. I was at that time reading a new
translation of this ancient legend and was inspired by some of
the descriptions of locales and events. At first, the various
movements had semi-programmatic subtitles, but after writing the
piece I decided that this was too naïve, and took the subtitles
out. Perhaps the performers can themselves decide by what each
particular section or movement might have been inspired!
Beowulf and my Variations for solo double bass are the result of
recognizing the new breed of bass player who seem to be able to
get round the instrument as though it were a violin."
