Work Overview
This composition is built around the Romantic period sonata form used in orchestral writing of the period and features 3 contrasting movements. Total performance time is just under 30 minutes.
The goal was to take Western Art Music composition and structural techniques and apply them to the jazz Big Band. The addition of the Viola as featured soloist came about through the composer working with Ms. Marianne Yeoman on an earlier recording. The blend between Tenor Saxophone and Viola captured his interest and felt it would work well over a Big Band backing.
The piece features polyphony as a key musical driver in the composition process.
