Work Overview

This work was composed as a competition piece for finalists in a competition hosted by the Queensland Clarinet and Saxophone Society in 1991. It was first performed by Paul Dean and Stephen Emmerson, plus each of the twenty clarinet finalists.

T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets - passages of Burnt Norton in particular - inspired the music, which is an exploration of various experiences of time: muscular and corporeal in The Dance (Mvt I); "neither from nor towards", "still yet moving" (Mvt II); and a centring towards "the still point (of the turning world)" - "only through time, time is conquered" (Mvt III). From Fire By Fire and Time and the Bell are two other works by the same composer drawn from this same wellspring of ideas.
