Score
Celtic cross : a dialogue for violin and chamber orchestra / Peter Rankine.
Library shelf no. 784.3172/RAN 1 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
As suggested by the title, the piece is a mix of Celtic-inspired lyricism and sonorities, crossed with the wonderful forces and language of the orchestra. The composer's own history involved with Celtic music furnished the general style of writing. The wind section features delicious sinuous double-reed sounds, enhanced by the dark broody tones of bass clarinet. These act as a foil for the soloist and string sonorities, and the choice of this palette sparked the composition.
