Work Overview
According to Vincent Persichetti and his writings contained in Twentieth-Century Harmony: Creative Aspects and Practice "there are three categories of intervallic materials from which chords may be built: thirds or sixths (tertian), fourths or fifths (quartal), and seconds or sevenths (secundal)." 'Aequilibrium' for flute, clarinet, viola, cello, trombone, piano and percussion is an exploration of these principles utilizing physical and psychological concepts of consonance and dissonance, the harmonic language of the twelve primary intervals of western art music, and a polyrhythmic framework of emaciating density. Compositional techniques of juxtaposition, octave displacement and inversion have been utilized to construct a simple five-chord motive, sequentially transformed via textural development, as well as modulation to the dominant of all twelve key centres. The intervallic order governed by the desire to generate a musical portrayal of the dissonance-consonance curve.
