Work Overview
'A borboleta' or 'The Butterfly' was commissioned by the Logos Foundation with funds provided by Arts Victoria for performance by the Logos Foundation Robot Orchestra at the Tetrahedron Concert Hall in Ghent, Belgium as part of 7th International Krikri 'Polypoetry' Festival 2011, 31 March - 4 April, 2011. The work incorporates thirty-seven of the Logos Foundation automatons (electromechanical computer-controlled acoustic instruments fitted with additional MIDI-mapped lights) and explores not only the 'butterfly effect' and chaos theory, fractals such as the 'Koch Snowflake' and 'Cantor Set', probability theory and Markov chains, 'deep sleep theme generation', fifteen-part tempo canons (or contrapuntal structures utilizing fifteen tempos simultaneously), and four simultaneous tuning systems, but also True Random Number Generators (TRNGs are nondeterministic and aperiodic, and based on atmospheric noise, as opposed to Pseudo-Random Number Generators, or PRNGs, which are deterministic and periodic, and based on algorithms that use mathematical formulae) to make decisions on light sequences and instrumental colour orderings on the basis of random integer and sequence generation.
