Work Overview
ata whenua, land of reflections, is a compositional
ecosphere inspired by Maori for Fjordland; ata - morning, images,
shadows, reflections and whenua - land, for it was whilst
traversing the 45th parallel South that the initial oncept for
this piano trio was born in the South Island of New Zealand.
Six months later, whilst I was nestled within another fjord 66°
North toward the near Arctic in Siglufjördur, Iceland, the
composition acquired its true form as a metaphor for a liminal
subconscious reverie on the fragile balance between longing and
belonging. The essence of the work can be described as movement,
flow, direction and focus in the cosmos and in the soul.
