Work Overview

This Gloria is part of the Osanna Mass, which is based on the set of plainchants for the Mass, Kyriale IX, and several Jewish liturgical melodies. As well as incorporating sections of the Gloria IX chant, the Gloria refers to plainchants from the other Mass movements, and a Jewish melody for the Aleinu prayer (a hymn of praise which has similarities to the Gloria text). The associations of these borrowed melodies 'illuminate' the Gloria text, and material derived from the ringing of European and English church bells symbolically illustrates the glory of God and the entombment of Christ. The piece ends with the plainchant melody above the lower voices ringing the changes of a 'Plain Hunt' bell peal.
