Work Overview
As Hildegard of Bingen's music and plainchant antiphones are usually heard only in Latin, Becky was inspired to bring English translations to music lovers when she discovered Barbara Newman's Symphonia. Her translations of this Antiphon bring a new vibrancy to the spiritual world of Hildegard, our first woman composer whose works, words and melodies, are a taproot for women composers today. In this three-minute piece, Becky places the mezzo-soprano as the prophetess singing Hildegard's orginal melody set to an almost regal procession of worshipful strings. The strong work provides a startling example of Hildegard's vision of God and love to provide strength and light for our world whatever century we live in.
Becky arranged this Antiphon for string quartet and mezzo-soprano from her 1990 chamber orchestra piece, O, Wonder! This version has the strength of the original in a smaller scale.
