Peace : a cantata for John Monash / David Kram.

Library shelf no. CD 2938 [Not for loan]

Work Overview

This cantata celebrates peace, Australia and the friendship between France and Australia, embodied in the life and times of Sir John Monash (1865-1931). Ignorance about Sir John Monash is dispelled through this work. Audiences and participants realise the essential Australian elements of his character; egalitarian, civilised and innovative. Furthermore, the valuable contribution of Australia's forces in bringing World War One to an expeditious close.

The cantata has twenty-nine pieces. It may be performed with an interval. Anthems extolling peace serve to frame commentaries on the Australia of Monash and his life stages, including some words written by Monash himself.

Monash was a keen musician. This work draws on the styles of the music of his times, so mid-European, romantic, classical, folkloric, anthem-like, theatrical, some spoken dialogue, songs, arias, duets, trios, quartets with choir, purely choral, four children's songs.

In 2018 the composer was commissioned by French and Mauritian organisation to perform it in those countries so he made a French libretto and adapted, shortened and rescored it for concert band, renaming it Cantate pour la paix.

The Rotary Movement encouraged and supported the work.
