Work Overview
Late in 2019 I had been considering composing a work for 'cellist John Addison (with piano) I had promised him, but had yet to decide on an idea. On the evening of New Year's Day, 2020, I saw the French film, 'La Belle et la Bête', on T.V. and was so charmed by the waltz music at the conclusion I couldn't get the tune out of my head. Within a couple of days I decided to refer to the first short phrase of that melody in my new piece for John. This would also serve to acknowledge the film as my source of motivation. The result is Allegory, a ten-minute piece in three linked sections representing anguish, transformation and fulfillment, in that order, as in so many fairy tales.
