Work Overview

This work is a medley of songs popular in Australia before 1900 (hence the title.) The unifying theme is Going Kangarooing by the goldfields entertainer Charles Thatcher (the Colonial Minstrel of the title.) The original version was for brass quartet; the F horn part was added later, as was an optional part for percussion (1 player).

The Overture is a display piece which touches on styles as varied as Gustav Holst, Shostakovich, Malcolm Arnold and Joseph Horowitz. It is tonal throughout.
