Work Overview
The best way I can describe Dog Biscuit is that it's a sort of a hyper canon. A canon, of course, refers to an old, old, OLD music technique where a melody (or a whole piece) is composed in such a way that the material within the piece can be manipulated to complement itself, either harmonically, rhythmically or both (and a well-known example of a simple canon is Row, Row, Row your boat, still a favorite amongst four-year-olds across the globe). Dog Biscuit is not technically a canon, but it is made up of a number of complementary lines that are gradually layered over the top of each other in such a way that what initially seems to be a completely chromatically random mish-mash of notes is actually a quirkily tonal foot tapper.
Later this year, I intend to use this work as a movement within a larger piece for the same instrumentation - keep your eyes peeled!
