Work Overview
Echo Tango was written at the invitation of Dawn Bennett and Diana Blom as part of their Australian East and West project to promote the composition and performance of Australian viola and piano music. The work is a set of variations on the melody and chords of a SATB song ("Echo in the Blood"), which was part of my score for the music theatre work, The Flood (2004). The lyrics of the song were written by Janis Balodis, who suggested a tango-style musical treatment of his text. It has always been my feeling that the melody and tango feel of the original would also lend themselves to an instrumental version.
