Action music 2 (septets: keyboard, percussion, string, woodwind)
by Erik Griswold (2017)
Action Music 2 is the sequel to my 2013 composition Action Music, created for The Listening Museum, and premiered in the working factory of Urban Art Projects. Action Music opened up new directions for me. It was my first "open instrumentation" composition, the first to use extensive graphic notation, and the first to use a "non-specific pitch" notation. In AM2 I've explored other possible meanings of "action music," such as connections with Jackson Pollock's action painting, and notions of musical and political action, in particular considering influences from African-American music (Charlie Parker) and Fluxus (Dick Higgins, Alison Knowles). I'm really grateful to the APRA AMCOS Art Music Fund for their support of the project, and the wonderful musicians of Aventa Ensemble, Crash Ensemble, Ensemble 0, Ensemble Offspring, and Naked Eye Ensemble to whom it's dedicated: your skill, dedication and creativity is inspiring, to say the least.
Instrumentation: Open instrumentation.
Duration: 12 min.
Dedication note: Action Music 2 is dedicated to is dedicated to these amazing ensembles: Aventa Ensemble (Canada) Crash Ensemble (Ireland) Ensemble Offspring (Australia) Ensemble 0 (France) NakedEye Ensemble (USA)
Commission note: Action Music 2 was created with generous support from the APRA AMCOS Art Music Fund.
