Work Overview

Five to Nine began life in 2014 as a semi-improvised work for synchronised looped viola and looped cello, based around the 13-note horn of a tour bus in Ahmadebad in western India. As such, the looped version bears the cheeky title The Horn of India. My improvising partner was Monique Bartkowiak, and segments of her melodies have been incorporated into this score with her permission.

Five years later I was approached by DeepBlue, a Brisbane-based indie orchestra, to contribute to a show entitled "Our Place" exploring the changing nature of human connection over time. The brief was to depict some aspect of Australian suburban life in pre-Internet times. I had wanted to adapt "The Horn of India" for a live string orchestra, and its gentle joyousness was squarely in keeping with the memories of uncomplicated backyard leisure that I and millions of others had enjoyed as children, so I made a transcription and gave it the equally cheeky retitle Five to Nine as an inverted nod to Dolly Parton's iconic song about work hours. It is also a subtle reference to the work's signature chord, a pair of stacked perfect fifths that spells out a fifth and a ninth.
