Work Overview
On March 11th, 2011 tragedy struck Japan. An earthquake set off a tsunami which devastated vast areas of Japan killing many people and displacing many more. I heard of the disaster on the news. That night I sat up late and improvised some of my thoughts into music. I recorded the little improvisations on my phone but there they remained, dormant and unfinished for several years. In 2015 I was again improvising and I was struck with an idea of fusing the disparate themes together to form a single work. With the imagery and the emotion of the disaster in mind I set about creating a work that would capture the emotion and grief surrounding the events.
