Work Overview

Composed as a film piece with Sally Golding. Home movies from the State Library of Queensland, most dating from the 1920s-1930s, depict unstaged daily domestic life with music that is tender, direct, exciting and ultimately elegaic.

Instrumentation: Soprano saxophone, violin, viola, double bass, piano. (Normally performed with the film by Sally Golding, but may be performed as instrumental music)

Difficulty: Advanced — Some parts are easy, others require rhythmic expertise

Commission note: Commissioned by Queensland Music Festival.

First performance: by Topology at Queensland at Home (Majestic Theatre, Pomona) on 1 Aug 2009

The composer cites as influences on the work: film music, Terry Riley, Erik Satie, Sufjan Stevens, Jon Brion, Thomas Newman.

Co-composed with Julia Davidson.

May be played without film, but the piece is designed to be performed with Sally Golding's film, the performers synchronising by use of a click track.
