To The Edge : for small orchestra / Barry Conyngham.
Library shelf no. 784.2/CON 11 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
To The Edge is in some ways a short concerto for small orchestra. The images suggested to me by the title are used freely: to the edge of some aspect of playing a particular instrument, to the edge of emotional expression, to the edge of pitch, speed, dynamic, coming near to the edge, if not quiet getting there.
The work focuses on individual instruments, or pairs, or groups within the ensemble. With comments from Piano and Percussion, the work evolves through
(i) Horn and Oboes
(ii) Clarinet and Bass Clarinet
(iii) Bassoons
(iv) Flute and Piccolo
(v) String section, pizzicato then tremolando
(vi) Finally, all the instruments, rushing at speed to the edge…
