Work Overview

Beachscapes is a study on Coogee beach, a place I used to spend much time in my youth. Before writing the work I wanted to delve into some older depictions of the area. I came across author and poet Henry Kendall's (1839-1882) work simply titled, "Coogee". In the text he hones in on the wildness of the place, its turbulent seas, angular rock faces and violent storms. Charles Baylis also captured a particularly brooding photo of the beach in 1880. Growing up I only ever saw Coogee as a cheery, sun-drenched hive of activity so it was interesting to get into the minds of these artists and see the place through a different lens. This works marries these perspectives together: turbulent, stormy wave-like material born out of more reflective moments, alternating with lighter, hopeful tones.
